Editing Decisions part II - Dom

In this part I'm mainly going to discuss the use of green screen and colour/saturation use.

To manage the effect of him capturing the image with his hands, here is what we did.

First record footage of the of the hands in the desired position, in our case like he is framing something. Once you have this footage (record for quite a while so you can pick the best parts) upload it onto final cut pro etc

Then import the green screen footage into the film. use a filter called Primatte RT to remove the green background, so essentially we now have a plain pair of hands.

Now, find the image that you want the hands placed over, in this case I will use the graffiti on the wall. Normally you would only need on image but because of our saturation to full colour we will need 2.

Layer the scenes on top of each other so that whatever is seen is on top, i.e in this case our hands. The next image should be a cropped (colour image) version of the graffiti; cropped so it fits within the hands

using a blurred edges filter you can make the 2 images blend more easily. this will help make it look better in the next part

This is where he moves the hands away and the colour turns to saturation again. originally the colour image in the hands has the light rays filter a black tint filter and the contrast is turned up. the light rays and contrasts help the image appear brighter and more dazzling; how our character can see it. As the hands are taken away from the image, the tint and light rays are set (see images) so that they will decrease accordingly so that the colour image ends up like the saturated image around it.

There were other times where it was difficult to do this effect because of the footage or other issues so some shots in my opinion aren't as good looking as others.

For example this shot of the beach isn't hasn't turned out as good as the others, mainly because we just didn't have the right footage and re filming was not an option at this point.

There was one point where, the character looks down at the image he has 'captured'. initially it looked awful! It was really unrealistic and just didn't look right at all. The playing around with filters etc I found a soft edges and out of focus filter to soften the image more. This made a massive difference and improved the aesthetics of the shot. Here it is.

Overall editing was difficult at times, mainly because there was some footage that just wasn't right or very difficult to work with and edit. This was mainly because of the 2 days we used for filming, hence differences such as the sea conditions are apparent. There's not much we can do about this continuity

So here is the finished effect.

Hopefully our demographic audience will see that this is his perspective on the little things that make his day that bit brighter in the grey world around him.

  1. This is very good Dom perhaps you could add the meaning implied to the audience
